BIG NEWS!!!!

NEW PLAYGROUND
Rex Ferguson-Baird, principal of Brooklands School, is a happy guy these days. The reason? Brooklands has been chosen as the first community in Manitoba to win a national Let Them Be Kids Helping Hand Award, which provides a 50% dollar match to funds raised by community volunteers for building community playgrounds.
Pat Elsworth, information officer for St. James School Division, said: “A group of volunteers from Brooklands School community will re-develop their schoolyard and their neighbourhood with the building of the playground, to be officially constructed/opened on June 26, 2010. The development of the playground will receive strong support and leadership provided by Let Them Be Kids and the St. James School Division.”
The latter will supply base construction materials.
As the playground is a joint-use project with the City of Winnipeg, Coun. Scott Fielding (St. James-Brooklands) made everyone’s day by dropping off a cheque for $60,000 last week, which when matched, contributes $120,000 to the project. The playground goal is $150,000, leaving another $30,000 to go.
To donate, volunteer to help raise funds, or participate in the big playground “build” June 26, call Rex Ferguson-Baird at 633-9630, or visit www.ltbkbrooklands.blogspot.com.
“The children in our neighbourhood are looking forward to a safe and welcoming place to play,” said Rex. “We are grateful to our parents and Let Them Be Kids for helping us get started, and for their tremendous support in helping us do something good for the kids in our community.”
Talk about a win-win. Get it done, Brooklands! Published in the Winnipeg Sun by Laurie Mustard

Some of the kids toured play structures that will have some of the same equipment that we will have on our playgrounds, the kids were SUPER EXCITED to take part in this event, and look forward to see what will be in our community!
